Accountability Systems for Measuring, Monitoring and Reporting on Sustainable Cities Policies in Latin America

Posted by Fabienne Perucca, UN-Habitat March 7 2017 0 Local experience

UN-Habitat in collaboration with the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, has launched the “Accountability Systems for Measuring, Monitoring and Reporting on Sustainable Cities Policies in Latin America” project. It is implemented in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The SDGs include a specific goal on cities, the Goal 11 on making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

The project will strengthen accountability systems in Latin American cities and support monitoring of government policies for achieving the SDGs, in particular the Goal 11. It provides opportunities for the establishment of mechanisms for dialogue between local governments and civil society in monitoring and overseeing the implementation of the SDGs at the local level. The project is demand-driven and addresses the measurement of public policies that aim at the achievement of Goal 11, covering issues ranging from housing, slum upgrading to public space, urban mobility and air quality amongst other relevant themes.

It will be implemented between 2016 and 2019 and the expected outputs are:

  • Accountability initiatives & tools
  • Training manual on SDGs, urban development, accountability
  • Indicators on sustainability
  • New research and best practices

The activities cover:

  • Training and capacity development for local government
  • Strengthening national training institutions
  • Developing accountability initiatives
  • Innovative city labs for city stakeholders
  • Online Urban Accountability Academy
  • Supporting data analysis indicators and visualization

activities
